The Ultimate Guide to Minnetonka Schools
Everything You Need to Know About One of Minnesota's Most Sought-After School Districts
If you've spent more than five minutes talking to someone who's considering moving to the Lake Minnetonka area, you've probably heard this question:
"Tell me about Minnetonka Schools."
And honestly, it's one of my favorite questions to answer.
As a Realtor, I've helped countless families move into the district. As a parent, I had two daughters attend Groveland Elementary, complete the Spanish Immersion program from Kindergarten through 12th grade, participate in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, and ultimately continue studying Spanish in college where they both earned minors in the language.
I also served as President of the Minnetonka High School Booster Club, giving me a front-row seat to the academics, athletics, arts, and student activities that make Minnetonka Schools so special. There are literally hundreds of clubs at MHS -something for EVERYONE! From yo-yo club to knitting and everything in-between.
So while I can absolutely help you find the perfect house, I can also help you understand one of the biggest reasons families move here in the first place: the schools.
Why Families Choose Minnetonka Schools
Minnetonka Schools consistently ranks among the top public school districts in Minnesota.
Families are drawn here because of:
• Strong academic performance
• Language immersion opportunities
• International Baccalaureate (IB)
• VANTAGE and MOMENTUM programs
• Exceptional arts and music programs
• Competitive athletics

• College-level coursework
• Gifted and talented programming
• Outstanding extracurricular activities
The district serves students from Minnetonka, Deephaven, Greenwood, Excelsior, Shorewood, Tonka Bay, Woodland, parts of Chanhassen, Eden Prairie, and surrounding communities.
For many families, the schools are the reason they begin their home search here.
Minnetonka's Language Immersion Program
One of the things that truly sets Minnetonka apart is its language immersion program.
Every elementary school in the district offers a language immersion pathway beginning in Kindergarten. Families can choose between English, Spanish Immersion, or Chinese Immersion depending on the school they attend.
Minnetonka's immersion program is one of the largest and most established in Minnesota and allows students to continue their language studies all the way through high school graduation.
Parents often ask me:
"How does immersion actually work?"
It's a fair question because the concept sounds intimidating at first.
Students don't simply learn Spanish or Chinese as a class subject.
They learn their everyday classroom subjects in the immersion language.
That means math, science, social studies, reading, and classroom instruction are taught primarily in Spanish or Chinese during the early years.
Children learn naturally through daily use of the language rather than memorizing vocabulary words.
By the time students reach upper elementary grades, English instruction is incorporated while maintaining strong immersion learning.
The result is students who develop fluency while staying on track academically with their peers.
As a parent who watched two children go through the program from Kindergarten through high school graduation, I can tell you it was one of the best educational decisions we ever made.
Both of my daughters attended Groveland Elementary in the Spanish Immersion program, continued immersion through middle school and high school, and eventually earned Spanish minors in college.
