Every Dog's Guide to Lake Minnetonka: The Best Dog Parks, Trails & Off-Leash Adventures 🐾
Let's be honest. For many of us, the dog has just as much say in where we live as the humans do.
A fenced yard? Important.
Nearby trails? Very important.
A place to unleash the zoomies without terrifying the neighbors? Absolutely critical.
One of the things I love about living around Lake Minnetonka is how dog-friendly the area is. Whether your pup is a social butterfly who wants to meet every dog in the county or prefers a peaceful walk through the woods, there is a spot for every personality.
Here's your complete guide to dog parks, leash laws, and the best places to explore with your four-legged best friend.
First Things First: Know the Leash Rules
Minnetonka updated its leash ordinances in 2025. In general, dogs must now be leashed in city parks, on trails, and in public spaces unless they are in a specifically designated off-leash area.
The basic rules:
- Dogs must remain under control at all times
- Pick up after your dog (nobody likes "that guy")
- Keep vaccinations current
- Dogs are only allowed off-leash in designated areas
- You may not bring more than two dogs into designated off-leash areas at one time in Minnetonka parks
Now for the fun part.

Dog Park Etiquette: A Friendly Reminder
Your dog may be perfect.
The rest of us have met our dogs, too.
A few simple rules make everyone happier:
- Pick up after your dog
- Don't bring a sick dog to the park
- Avoid bringing dogs in heat
- Keep an eye on your dog instead of scrolling Instagram
- Bring water during hot summer days
- If your dog isn't enjoying the experience, leave before it becomes a problem
And perhaps the most important rule of all:
Just because your dog is friendly doesn't mean every dog wants to say hello.
The Lake Minnetonka Dog Owner's Dream
One of the reasons people love living around Lake Minnetonka is that outdoor living isn't just for humans.
Between the trails in Minnetonka, off-leash parks in Chanhassen and Eden Prairie, walks through Excelsior, and endless opportunities to get outside, it's a fantastic place to own a dog.
In fact, after helping buyers for 25 years, I've learned something important:
People think they're shopping for a house.
The dog thinks they're shopping for a yard.
And if we're being honest...
The dog usually wins.
Whether you're relocating to Minnetonka, Excelsior, Wayzata, Victoria, Deephaven, Woodland, Shorewood, or anywhere around the lake, having great parks and trails nearby is one of those little things that makes everyday life better.
For both ends of the leash.
